Hong Kong Protests 2019
I was very fortunate to be able to cover part of the 2019 Pro-Democracy Hong Kong protests over two separate protests – the Yuen Long retaliation protest, which was in retaliation to the attack on peaceful protesters by armed thugs in Yuen Long Station, and the main anti-extradition bill / pro-democracy protest. It was a truly humbling experience. A cocktail of intensity – from the rhythmic smashing of umbrellas and poles onto metal, in cohesion with the ongoing Cantonese chanting and drumming, mixed with a consistent stinging from the drifting clouds of tear gas. It is never pleasant to see so much distress and anger towards something, but on the contrary, it was a hugely powerful and enlightening sight to see the people of Hong Kong, in such numbers, standing up for what they believe in, and know is right.
